SEPTEMBER 2018
A message from District Governor, Andrew Hamilton

The Rotary year is well under way with lots of exciting Club and District activities happening.

District Change Over was held at St Clair Golf Course in Dunedin on Sunday 1st July. It was a very enjoyable day with entertainment from the District’s very clever magician PDG Jonathan Usher, and our MC was AG Derek King. I would like to take this opportunity to once again pass on our thanks to IPDG Bruce Cowan and his partner Jill for the great job they did in the 2017/18 Rotary year. It is very much appreciated by everyone.

Otago Welcomes Rotary Global Scholars
This year District 9980 is privileged to have two Rotary Global Scholars with us.  Gretchen Druliner and Remaya Campbell (pictured) both arrived to start second semester study at the University of Otago.  And both are enrolled in the Masters of Peace and Conflict Studies (note this does not make them Peace Scholars – those scholarships are only available for students studying at Rotary Peace Centres of which there are six around the world.  The Otago Centre is not a Rotary Centre; but it has an excellent reputation).

Peace in Action
When Lorena Rodriguez (ICU 2017-19) visited the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, Japan, with her class, she realized the importance of honoring collective memory and allowing for multiple experiences in historical and social narratives. “As a Colombian and Rotary Peace Fellow,” Rodriguez says, “I think that memory can reveal forms of structural violence, resulting from dynamics of injustice and power, that are not readily connected with the actors of a conflict.”

Rotary International Convention - Toronto, Canada
What an awesome Rotary experience this was!  To all those Rotarians who have never been to an International Convention, go if you possibly can.  It is the best way to truly appreciate the “International” in Rotary International.  To be surrounded by 24,000 like-minded people passionate about making a difference in the world is very inspiring and recharges your Rotary batteries, ready to face the coming year (and in my case, the District Governor Elect role).

Kalamunda: The Making of a Rotaract Success Story
Listen in to hear from Assistant District Rotaract Rep, Emma Wignell, talking about the making of Kalamunda Rotaract (the biggest Rotaract club in WA) and what you can do to support your local Rotaract club.

An inspiring and informative presentation.

ShelterBox Update
We’re early in the 2018-19 Rotary year and sadly there has already been significant global natural disaster and conflict. In July there were two major earthquakes in Indonesia (6.4 and 6.9 magnitude), with many deaths and more than 300,000 people displaced from their destroyed homes.

Rotary Modernisation
Things have changed exponentially since the first Rotary Club meeting was held in Wellington in June 1921, but our organisational structure, and the way we do Rotary here, hasn’t necessarily kept pace with that change.  Rotary International has also challenged us to address declining membership numbers and we know cost and culture barriers exist for young people in joining Rotary.

Gore Cadre Member in Thailand
The Rotary Foundation (TRF) uses a variety of means of monitoring and evaluating the quality of projects it funds.  In the first half of 2018, the Foundation conducted a study of the sustainability of its global grant projects.  To help conduct the study, TRF sent out members of its Cadre of Technical Advisors (Rotarians who serve as volunteer experts) to interview project participants about the sustainability of a selection of completed projects.  Results will be provided to TRF Trustees so that they can make informed decisions about changes to global grant requirements moving forward.

The President's Monthly Message

Imagine if we could take a snapshot capturing all of the work Rotary does on a given day. No one – except Rotarians – would believe that a single organization was capable of accomplishing so much. In that snapshot you would see dedicated volunteers working to eradicate polio, setting up microloans, providing clean water, mentoring youth, and countless other actions.
